The Nine Club with Chris Roberts

The Nine Club is a skateboarding podcast and web series founded by professional skateboarder Chris Roberts in June 2016. The program is hosted by Roberts, videographer and producer Roger Bagley, and professional skateboarder Kelly Hart. Each episode features a lengthy interview-style roundtable discussion with an iconic skateboarding personality renowned for their role in skateboarding culture. Each episode varies from thirty-five minutes to two hours in length. Guests range from former and current professional skateboarders to industry personalities, artists, and media figures. Well-known actors, musicians, and artists who have a significant personal history with skateboarding have also appeared, including director Spike Jonze, musician Ben Harper, rapper Lil Wayne, and actor Austin Amelio, among others.

History[edit | edit source]

In 2016, Roberts started The Nine Club, a roundtable interview program then hosted by Roberts and Roger Bagley.[1] Kelly Hart was the first guest and later became a member of the hosting cast. The show has over eighty episodes and reached its one-year anniversary in June 2017 after interviewing some of the most legendary personalities in professional skateboarding, including Mike Carroll, Marc Johnson, Paul Rodriguez, and Andrew Reynolds.[2]

The program has the tagline "the show that has skaters talking." Guests often provide humorous and historically insightful stories and anecdotes about skateboarding culture and history through their own unique experiences and perspectives. Guests have commented on the show's intellectual and historiographic merits, highlighting the program's value as an oral history archive and conceptual relationship to programs such as the Smithsonian's Innoskate program.[3]

The program is often celebrated by longstanding print and digital skateboarding media outlets, such as Thrasher[4] and Transworld Skateboarding.[5] Jenkem Mag's interview with the hosts and founders about the show's mission, production, and origins further elaborates on how and why the show is seen as public historiography and archival work crucial to the preservation of skateboarding's historical and cultural legacies.[6] UK skateboarding magazine Sidewalk Mag also regularly cites from the Nine Club's digital archive in order to further the preservation of skateboarding history.[7] Similarly, Kingpin magazine also regularly features Nine Club content and provides critical commentary and feedback.[8] Discussions about the show, its guests, and the oral history archive that they provide have also emerged in and on Slap magazine[9] and Juice magazine's various platforms.[10]

Notable Guests[edit | edit source]

The Nine Club featured rapper Li'l Wayne, who is a recreational skateboarder, in late 2016, garnering over 350,000 views.[11] The entertainer's appearance on The Nine Club circulated across a variety of major music and television outlets, including MTV News, Billboard Magazine and BET.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] Previously, Ben Harper appeared in episode #16. Actor Austin Amelio, best known for his role as Dwight on The Walking Dead, was a guest on episode #45.

Actor and former professional skateboarder Bam Margera was featured on episode #70. His comments about being sexually assaulted that appeared on the show were broadcast across specialty media platforms such as High Snobiety[20] and The Daily Dot.[21]

Filmmaker, actor, and director Spike Jonze was also featured in episode #78.[22][23]

Set and Symbolic Gifts[edit | edit source]

The set is arranged and decorated with skateboarding memorabilia and props specific to each guest.

Guests have provided symbolic gifts for the set. For example, in episode #36 Marc Johnson provided the set with a digital picture frame that plays Roberts' world-famous switch kickflip, switch manual at the West LA Courthouse, looping the trick on repeat. In episode #43, Erik Bragg provided the hosts with a vintage styled The Nine Club neon sign. Both artifacts are prominently displayed on set and are visible throughout subsequent episodes. Brian Wenning also provided Kelly Hart with one of his original Habitat pro model decks on episode #53.[24]

In episode #58, Mark Appleyard gave Roberts and Bagley a framed caricature of themselves at The Nine Club studio. Appleyard also gifted Hart a pair of his signature decks, one from Flip and one from Element.
