FAQ
What is Hello Internet?
Hello Internet is an audio podcast hosted by YouTube content creators CGP Grey and Brady Haran. The podcast features discussions pertaining to their lives as professional creators for YouTube, the content of their most recent videos as well as their interests and annoyances. Typical topics include technology etiquette; movie and TV show reviews; plane crashes; vexillology; futurology; and the differences between Grey's and Haran's personalities and lifestyles. Why are H.I. listeners called "Tims"? The name was originally coined by Grey in "H.I. #7 Sorry, Language Teachers" at 52:40, referring to the fact that there could be a listener called Tim listening to the episode in an airplane. The term was used again several times in the same way, until "H.I. #50: Queen of Spades", when Grey mentions that a listener had suggested to make "Tim" the nickname for listeners of Hello Internet. Soon after, listeners of the show began to refer to themselves as "Tims", and it began to be used on the podcast as a term to refer to all the listeners of the show. What is the Nail & Gear? The Nail & Gear is the official flag of Hello Internet. It consists of a white gear with a nail going through it diagonally on a grey background. The gear symbolizes CGP "Mind of Metal and Wheels" Grey, and is nearly identical to the gear used in his logo, while the nail represents Brady "Hard as Nails" Haran. Why shouldn't the wiki just be on Wikia or Reddit? While Hello Internet wikis have been created on both Wikia and Reddit, both have major flaws that make them unsuitable platforms for the Hello Internet wiki. Wikia was where the Hello Internet wiki was originally, and supports infoboxes, images, and other features that MediaWiki, the software that Timpedia runs on, supports. There are several problems with Wikia however. One is that Wikia does not allow editors of a wiki change how their wiki looks, making Wikia wikis not appear to be very unique from each other. Another is that Wikia is more of a social media website than a wiki in many ways, as Wikia users can leave comments on the same page as articles, which makes an article appear to be less encyclopedic. The major issue with Wikia is how much advertising there is on it, which is a problem that is only getting worse over time. The Hello Internet wiki was eventually moved to the Hello Internet subreddit wiki on Reddit. While there are benefits to the subreddit wiki system compared to Wikia, such as less advertising and no comments on articles, there are major issues with using the subreddit wiki system. One is that on Reddit you have to be the moderator of a subreddit in order to upload images to a subreddit to use in articles, or to change the CSS of a subreddit wiki. Another is the subreddit wiki system's lack of features, such as no infoboxes, no page renaming, and no redirects. There are definitely issues with the Hello Internet wiki not being on Reddit or Wikia, such as the wiki not being as easy to find, and the fact that it isn't on Reddit, where people wouldn't have to leave the Hello Internet subreddit to look up information about Hello Internet. Benefits with the Hello Internet wiki using MediaWiki is that editors of the wiki can control the wiki's CSS and have more control over how the wiki is organized. How can I help improve Timpedia?
