The recent Minecraft Lets play (111) had Michael showing the tunnel after the tower was erected. It seems to just lead up to the surface. If you look at their Minecraft 2014 tour, the beginning has Gavin showing the surrounding area and you can locate a stone area north of Gavin's house. This would line up to the amount of squares Michael traveled in the Let's Play.
