The Read[1] is a weekly one-hour pop culture podcast based in New York City. One of several podcasts affiliated with the Loud Speakers Network headlined by The Combat Jack Show,[2] The Read is hosted by vlogger Kid Fury and internet personality Crissle West.[3][4][5]

History[edit | edit source]

The first episode was released on March 4, 2013. The Read is distributed via the iTunes Store, iHeartRadio Talk, Soundcloud, Spotify, and Stitcher. On iTunes, the podcast peaked at number three in the "New and Noteworthy" section charts and at number one in the comedy section charts.[4]

Format[edit | edit source]

During podcast episodes, Kid Fury and Crissle discuss and analyze pop culture and current events.[3][4][5] The two hosts have been friends for many years, and this camaraderie adds to the witty banter listeners enjoy each week. Both Kid Fury and Crissle are very open about their lives, including their sexuality and this creates an inclusive atmosphere. [6] The podcast's format has four sections:

  1. Black Excellence where Kid Fury picks someone in the black community to celebrate. One that has accomplished something that is worthy of high recognition.
  2. Hot Tops, previously Sick Sad World, also selected by Kid Fury (the segment has undergone several other name changes, including Hot Topics, Shade In Full, and the fan favorite, "Bitch, You Guessed It!!")
  3. Listener Letters as curated by Crissle (the segment is changed to Listener Questions when done during a live show)
  4. The Read where Kid Fury and Crissle "read" (African American gay slang for giving one's harsh opinion)[4] a person or topic.[4]

The show also begins with a movie quote that Kid Fury picks. It is then closed out by an acronym created Kid Fury. The acronym is usually inspired by something discussed in that particular episode.

Guests[edit | edit source]

Special guests have included Kelly Rowland, Trina, Franchesca Ramsey, Shaun Ross, Freshalina, Charlamagne Tha God, Estelle, Jenifer Lewis, Jazmine Sullivan, Reagan Gomez, and Roblé Ali. The hosts of fellow Loud Speakers network podcast The Friend Zone - Dustin Ross, HeyFranHey, and Assanté - also make regular collaboration appearances.
